Restaurant POS in India: KOT, Table & Billing Checklist
A checklist for Indian restaurants and cafés: test KOT, tables, bills, staff roles and shift reports. Ask about Oasis Table demos in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
The practical answer
What should a café or restaurant test in a POS demo?
Before choosing restaurant POS software, follow one order from the table or counter to the kitchen order ticket, any edits, the final bill and the shift report. Test the actual printer or kitchen screen, staff roles, split bills and payment types you use. Confirm whether waiter or captain ordering, setup, hardware, support and renewals are included in the written quote.
1. Map the way an order moves through your place.
A café, takeaway counter and full-service restaurant may use different steps. Draw the path from the first order to payment: who enters it, where it is prepared, how changes are sent to the kitchen and who closes the bill. Include dine-in, takeaway or delivery only if your team actually handles them.
Bring one simple order and one order with a change. Ask the provider to demonstrate both using the edition, devices and staff roles you are considering. This reveals where information is re-entered and who is responsible when a menu item is unavailable.
2. Test KOT printing and kitchen handoffs.
A Kitchen Order Ticket (KOT) communicates what the kitchen should prepare. Check how a new order reaches the right station, how a changed or cancelled item is marked, and whether a reprint is distinguishable from a new ticket. Use your actual printer or kitchen screen, not only a sample on the presenter’s laptop.
| Test | Check the handoff |
|---|---|
| Enter a table order | The correct table, items and modifiers reach the kitchen. |
| Change or cancel an item | The kitchen receives a clear update and the bill reflects the approved change. |
| Print or resend a KOT | Staff can tell a new order from a copy or correction. |
| Move or split a table | Items and payment responsibility remain clear after the change. |
| Close the bill | The receipt, payment type and shift report agree. |
3. Check tables, staff roles and payments.
Ask a server or cashier to complete the order without the presenter taking over. Check how tables are opened, held, transferred and closed, and how the team handles a split bill, a partial payment or a corrected order. Verify the permissions for voids, discounts and refunds.
If you expect waiters to place orders from a separate app or device, ask whether it is included, which devices it supports, what happens during an outage and whether setup or renewal fees apply. Do not infer that a “captain app” or payment gateway is included because a provider mentions it in a demo.
4. Rehearse a busy period and review the quote.
Test several orders close together and include a kitchen change. Check for duplicate tickets, unclear table status or a payment that is difficult to reconcile. Ask what the team can still do if the internet, printer or a connected device stops working, and how staff should recover safely.

Questions to ask about restaurant POS
What is a KOT in restaurant billing?
A Kitchen Order Ticket is a kitchen-facing record of the items to prepare. Ask to see how new items, changes, cancellations and copies are handled on your printer or kitchen display.
Is a waiter or captain app always included?
No. Confirm the product, supported device, number of users, setup, internet requirements and ongoing fees in the written quote.
How can I compare restaurant POS providers?
Give each provider the same sample order and test table service, kitchen handoff, changes, payment and end-of-shift reporting with the staff who will use the system.
