Retail POS Checklist for Indian Shops: What to Test at Peak Hours
India-wide retail POS checklist: test checkout speed, barcode lookup, corrections, stock, payments and outages. Oasis is based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
The practical answer
How do you choose retail billing software that stays usable during a rush?
To compare retail billing software for a busy counter, test a realistic basket with your cashier, scanner, keyboard and printer in the quoted edition. Check corrections, receipts, payment totals and stock impact, then repeat offline if that matters to your shop. Ask which functions need internet access and get device, setup, support and renewal costs in writing.
1. Define what “fast” means at your counter.
Peak-hour speed is not just the time it takes to scan one item. Include the steps your cashier repeats: find a product, change quantity, correct an entry, apply an allowed discount, take payment and print the receipt. Write down which actions should work from the keyboard and which need a mouse, scanner or manager approval.
Prepare a small test basket with ordinary items, a barcode, a quantity change and one correction. Ask your cashier—not only the presenter—to complete it while you note where they pause or need help. Repeat the same basket with each provider and record the product edition and devices used.
2. Follow a bill through the records.
A quick receipt is only one part of the sale. Check what happens to the product quantity, payment total and closing report after a completed sale, a void and a return. Ask your accountant which invoice and tax settings apply to your business, then have the provider demonstrate that workflow in the quoted setup.
| Test | Check the result |
|---|---|
| Scan a familiar product | The intended item, unit, price and tax settings appear on the bill. |
| Change a quantity | The total and stock movement reflect the quantity you entered. |
| Correct a mistaken item | The cashier can fix it, and any restricted action follows the agreed approval process. |
| Take your usual payment types | The receipt and payment record are clear; confirm whether any payment integration is included. |
| Print a receipt | Your printer, paper width and required invoice details work in the proposed setup. |
| Close a sample shift | Cash, non-cash payments, returns and discounts can be reviewed separately. |
3. Ask exactly what “offline” covers.
A provider may use “offline” to describe different things. Ask whether a cashier can still select products, complete a bill, print a receipt and review local records when the internet is disconnected. Then ask what pauses, such as remote reports, branch synchronisation, online payments or message delivery, and how records recover after reconnection.
Test the quoted edition on the device and network setup you plan to use. A claim about a product family does not prove that every feature, integration or device in your proposed package behaves the same way.
Check whether a POS fits your record-keeping needs.
A point-of-sale system is generally designed to keep transaction records for tasks such as sales review, stock updates or reconciliation. If you only want to calculate and print a bill without retaining sales history, tell the supplier before the demo and ask whether a simpler invoicing tool is a better fit.
4. Compare the whole setup, not just the screen.
Give each provider the same basket, printer details and must-have tasks. Have a second cashier try the workflow, and mark each requirement as demonstrated, needs configuration, unavailable or not tested. Do not treat a verbal “yes” as proof when a feature affects the way your team works.
Ask for a written quote that names the software edition, number of counters, devices, installation, data import, training, support and renewal terms. Oasis POS offers retail billing workflows; bring your sample products and equipment details so the team can show the relevant setup and confirm what is included.

Questions to ask before you choose
How should I test checkout speed?
Use the same realistic basket and cashier across providers. Include a correction, payment and receipt print, then record the edition, equipment and steps needed to finish the sale.
Can I use POS software without storing sales history?
That depends on how the product is designed and configured. Explain your record-keeping requirement before choosing; a full POS may not be the right match for a print-only billing workflow.
Does offline billing mean every feature works without internet?
No. Ask for a feature-by-feature outage demonstration and a clear explanation of what syncs later or remains unavailable.
