Garment POS for India: Size, Colour & Exchange Checklist

Compare variant stock, barcode tags and exchanges for Indian clothing, textile and footwear shops. Ask our Chennai, Tamil Nadu team about local demos.

The practical answer

What should a garment shop check in POS software for size and colour stock?

For clothing and footwear, test whether the POS keeps each style, size and colour distinct from the moment it is entered through sale, return and exchange. Scan a real tag, check the variant-level stock result and confirm that the receipt and reports reflect the change. Ask the supplier to demonstrate your printer and quoted edition before you migrate existing stock.

1. Give every style and variant a clear identity.

A shirt style may come in several sizes and colours. The stock record needs to distinguish each sellable variant, so a cashier can answer questions such as “Do we have this style in medium, in navy?” without guessing from the parent product total.

Prepare a sample list that includes a few styles, size ranges and colours. Ask the provider to show how variants are created, searched and counted. Check how the system handles a new size, a discontinued colour and a duplicate barcode before importing your catalogue.

2. Test the tag from printer to bill.

Bring one hangtag or label your shop already uses, plus the printer make and model. Check which details can appear on the label—such as style code, size, colour or MRP—then print and scan it using the proposed setup. Confirm alignment, barcode readability and the way the scanned item appears on the sale.

Do not assume that a printer connector guarantees the right label format. Roll size, label dimensions, printer mechanism and software configuration can all affect the result. Agree who will configure the layout and confirm any setup cost in the quote.

3. Walk through the exceptions.

Four garment workflows to test with sample stock
Try thisConfirm this
Sell one tagged variantThe selected size and colour are correct on the bill and stock record.
Find a variant without its tagStaff can search by the identifiers your team actually knows.
Exchange one size for anotherThe returned variant and replacement variant are both reflected in stock and the receipt history.
Return an item with a price differenceThe refund or additional payment follows your policy and is clear in the records.

Run these tests with a cashier and a sample customer sale. Ask how staff correct the wrong size or colour before payment, and whether a supervisor approval is needed for a discount or return.

4. Plan a clean stock import.

Before a migration, export a copy of your item list and review how each style, size, colour, barcode and opening quantity is represented. Agree how duplicate identifiers, missing variants and old labels will be handled. Import a small sample first, then compare variant totals with a physical count before preparing the full catalogue.

Questions for a garment POS demo

Should size and colour be separate products?

Ask the provider to show how your chosen system models a style and its individual sellable variants. The important check is whether staff can find the exact variant and whether sales and returns update the intended stock record.

Can a POS help with clothing exchanges?

Ask to process an exchange against the original sale, including a different size and a price difference. Confirm the stock, payment and audit results in the edition you are considering.

What should I bring to the demo?

A sample item list, size-and-colour matrix, a barcode label or hangtag, the printer details and your exchange policy are enough to make the walkthrough specific. Use sample data rather than private customer records.
